What do you do when you grow up with all the confidence in the world, you have a thriving career, and then all of the sudden the rug is pulled out from underneath you?
Well, that’s exactly what happened to us a few years ago…
We were on top of the world. We had been working in the skincare and wellness industry for nearly 20 years. We looked great, we felt great, and we had a client list that included several celebrities.
But then something happened that ate away at our confidence and would change our lives forever…
I started noticing wrinkles, a loss of elasticity, weight gain and all of the hormonally-induced wonders of nature. My skin and my body weren’t bouncing back the way they used to.
And, my sister and business partner, Rachel, developed a horrible case of Rosacea after her second child. Her face was red and covered with bumps.
For the first time in our lives, we were unsure of ourselves. It was hard for us to look at ourselves in the mirror. Our minds began to fill with negative self-talk.
Thankfully, something our father had said to us countless times over the years started to play in our heads:
To be the difference you must make the difference.
Remembering his words got us to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and start looking for a solution.
We knew it was possible to love our skin again, we just needed to get radical in our approach. We had to develop the “don’t take no for an answer kind of attitude” and go for the radical “Yes.”
We wanted to create an anti-aging skincare product that would not only reduce wrinkles and add elasticity, but also soothe and calm sensitive skin.
We had been by our father’s (who was a brilliant reconstructive plastic surgeon) side in his lab since the age of 10, so we had access to some of the best chemists in the world. It was part of our DNA to go back to the lab to find a solution.
We were prepared to do whatever it took to create the product we wanted; we didn’t care what it cost. We weren’t planning to sell it; we just wanted to heal Rachel’s redness and breakouts, and also improve the look and feel of my skin.
So we went into the lab, and after some trial and error, we did it! We created a product that transformed Rachel’s skin within weeks, and people started stopping me on the street asking what I did for my skin. The results were so amazing we started sharing the product with our friends and celebrities, and they, too, experienced extreme results.
Well, word started to spread and before long, we actually launched a company called Radical Skincare.
The products have not only transformed our skin, they have transformed our lives. And now, using skin care as a metaphor for life, we’re helping our clients do the same.
This might sound like a stretch, but you can use your skincare regimen to improve the quality of your life. And all you have to do is use the marvelous imagination that Bob often talks about.
For instance, when you’re washing your face and the rest of your body, just think of the process as both an internal and external cleansing. We suggest that you consciously think of washing away any negative self-talk, any doubts or fears that are not supporting you in your journey nor getting you where you want to go.
Or when using an eye cream, remind yourself of your vision for the future. Think about what you want to visualize today that is going to make a big difference in your life.
Just as we found a formula for creating amazing skincare products, there is also a formula for creating a life you love. You might just need a pound of passion, a cup of purpose or a spoonful of focus. We are proof positive that, no matter what your age, it is possible to love both your skin and your life again. You just might have to get radical in your approach.
