If you spend any time on social media – or for that matter, watching television – you’ve probably seen the remarkable #xmasjammies video put out by the Holderness family of Raleigh, North Carolina.
What started out as a fun twist on the traditional Christmas letter went viral in a BIG way. Since the video launched in early December, it’s been featured on news programs and talk shows all over the U.S. and beyond, discussed in newspaper articles and blog posts, and shown up in countless Facebook and Twitter feeds.
As of today, the video has racked up an astonishing 12.6 million YouTube views.
Whether you’ve seen it a dozen times or none, I want to share it with you here. Because what I see when I watch this video is so much more than an amazingly creative Christmas greeting with a catchy tune.
I see a unique and wonderful example of what it means to be a Goal Achiever, and of the extraordinary things that happen when you take ACTION on your goals.
From their 6-year-old daughter learning how to count to 100 in Chinese, to their 4-year-old son performing in a class recital, to the parents completing an Ironman triathlon and BOTH landing parts in a major motion picture, this video is a fantastic catalog of goals set and reached during the course of the previous year. I love the fact that they celebrate each other’s achievements together, and so joyously — just as we all should when we find ourselves in receipt of something we have worked hard to achieve.
The biggest achievement of all is revealed near the end of the video, when Penn Holderness, the husband and father of the clan, announces that he’s decided to leave the comfort and security of his career as an anchorman at their local news station, and join his wife Kim in her startup company, The Green Room.
As Kim says in the video, “It was the biggest decision of his life.”
I imagine that decision had been brewing for some time. I’ll bet it was preceded by a lot of late-night conversations between the two of them. A lot of “should I/shouldn’t I” and weighing of pros and cons. And probably a good healthy dose of fear, too.
But Penn and Kim did make the leap. And what was awaiting them on the other side? More positive feedback, praise, and publicity than they had ever imagined — which will undoubtedly translate into a transformational amount of business, profit, and growth for their company.
When you set a clear goal, decide that you will achieve it, and then take action to achieve it, magic will happen. The universe WILL reward you with results. It always, always does.
