How has your year been so far?
Are you on track to meet the goals and resolutions you set for 2017?
It’s only mid-November, so you may think it’s a bit early to be asking these questions.
But I’ve discovered it’s the PERFECT time, and here’s why…
Many people don’t get much done on their goals in November and December. Their commitment and focus fade, especially during the holidays. Then, when all the celebrations are over, they gear up for a new year by setting resolutions and goals on January 1st.
However, if you decide what you want NOW, you’ll have time to not only finish the year strong, but you’ll also have some momentum to carry you into the New Year.
My New Year’s routine
Instead of coasting to a landing on December 31st like most people, I always start my new year in November.
So, even though there are still several weeks left in the calendar year, I’ve already assessed 2017, and I’m currently working on my goals for 2018.
That means, unlike the masses, not only will I already have my goals set for the year when I wake up on January 1st, but I will have made progress on them.
Imagine kicking off your calendar year that way. No downtime while you set goals and make plans. Instead, your goals and your game plan will be firmly implanted in your mind.
Don’t get me wrong. I believe in setting New Year’s resolutions.
But, in my opinion, January 1 is a terrible time to make them. Waiting until the year has already started, puts you behind the eight ball right off the bat.
However, if you’ve already figured out what you want and made an action plan for how you’re going to start moving toward it, you’ll be well out of the gate when the New Year rolls in.
Then, on January 2nd, you’ll be able to pick right up where you left off before the calendar turned.
Get ready for a magnificent 2018
The way to start 2018 off with a real bang is to begin formulating and working on your resolutions early. And there’s no better time than today.
That doesn’t mean you should write down the first things that pop into your head and then stow them away in a drawer for the next six weeks.
Nor does it mean you should dive in without a plan.
You’re starting early, so you’ve got time to really think about what you want to accomplish next year, and why.
Start by describing what your life would look like if you could achieve anything you choose next year. Choose something you feel very drawn to.
You don’t have to justify to anyone why you want it – not even to yourself. It can be anything… as long as it doesn’t infringe on someone else’s rights.
Just make sure that you want it with your heart and soul. Otherwise, the goal will not serve its purpose, which is to help you bring more of yourself to the surface.
You see, you are a perfect expression of an infinite power. The proper goal will provide you with the incentive to increase your level of awareness of who you are and what you are capable of.
Every aspect of your life always reflects your current level of awareness. As you become more conscious of your oneness with the infinite power within you and its laws of expression, that awareness will be reflected in your results.
Once you’ve got your resolution(s) firm in your mind…
Avoid this all too common trap
Millions of people set resolutions each year. However, only a small percentage do what it takes to achieve them.
So, don’t just think about how great it would be to reach your goal; decide what actions you’re going to need to take each day to make them a reality.
Again, you’re not up against the clock here, so think through them in detail and write them down.
“Test” your plan by implementing those actions to see if they move you toward your goal and if they’re realistic. If not, tweak and adjust until you land on the plan you think will get you there, while being open and aware of signs, signals and opportunities that may require you to make further adjustments.
Everyone’s gung-ho at the start…
this lets you maintain your enthusiasm
At first, it’s relatively easy to work on our goals and resolutions.
But, three, six, or nine months in, the enthusiasm wanes and we start to make excuses about why we can’t do this or that.
Before long, the resolutions are half-met or abandoned altogether.
However, there are some simple and powerful things you can do to keep that from happening to you.
Here are a few examples of things that will keep you fired up and on-task throughout the year:
- Write your goal, in the present tense, on a goal card. Carry the card with you always, and read it at least twice a day. Each time you read it, abandon yourself to your ideal—imagine that you are already experiencing what you desire.
- Spend 15 to 60 minutes reading each day—the closer you can get to 60 minutes, the better. Reading is the fastest way to increase your level of awareness and success. If you want suggestions for what to read, click here to see some of my favorites books.
- Establish a support system, such as getting an accountability partner. Set up weekly calls to share your tasks for the week, check in with each other on your progress, share your challenges and breakthroughs, and hold each other accountable.
To recap, if you’re serious about achieving your resolutions next year, do the following things before the clock strikes midnight on December 31st…
Set appropriate goals, establish an action plan, get an accountability partner, and take some action (even if it’s minimal) on your goals.
If you start today and genuinely commit to the process, you will guarantee that this time next year, you’ll be looking back at a string of incredible accomplishments, and living the life that you’re dreaming of today.
And, on December 31st, you can ring in the New Year knowing you really have something to celebrate!
